Artist’s Statement
Mary Ann and Jim Stagner Mary Ann was a professional portrait photographer and operated her own portrait studio for almost 30
Our work is all original photographic images that are photographed, cropped, retouched, and printed by us. The images are made by medium format Hasselblad negative cameras, 35mm Minolta negative and slide cameras, and Fuji S2 or S3 (Nikon Body and lenses) Nikon D3, or Minolta 7D digital cameras. A professional photography lab processes the negatives or slides and the lab (under our direction) sometimes does the printing, but we personally do most of the printing. We have both earned the degrees of Master Photographer and Photographic Craftsman awarded by the Professional Photographers of America. Mary Ann is a Fellow of Photography in Maryland and Virginia and Jim is a Fellow of Photography in Virginia. Jim has been selected a Photographer of the Year in Virginia by VPPA, and nationally as a Silver Level Photographer of the Year by PPA. We work together as a team in doing our fine art photography. Our fine art images have won professional photography awards at the state, regional, national, and international level. These include the Kodak Gallery Award for Photographic Excellence, the Fuji Masterpiece Award, and the American Society of Photographers (ASP) State Elite Award. We have images displayed in the Loan Collections of the Maryland PPA, Virginia PPA, and by PPA and ASP at the National Level. We provide nature, scenic, architecture (We have won the Paul Huffman Award for the best Architectural image in Virginia four times), flower, travel, and macro photographic images. We also produce photographic abstracts and are among the few photographers who are doing both black light photography and infra-red photography. The black light photography is done on Fuji slide film, and the infra-red using Kodak infra-red negative film. The abstracts are made using lens filters, lighting gels, and sometimes image manipulation (on negatives, slides or digital images) using professional computer software. We have successfully introduced the availability of electronic colored mats for some special selected images. The PPA provided one of these special images to the United States Congress representing the Commonwealth of Virginia in a screen saver CD produced by the PPA. Additionally, one image was displayed by the PPA at Photokino in Cologne, Germany as an example of American Photographic Art, and images are on permanent display at the ASP headquarters in Oklahoma City, and PPA headquarters in Atlanta, Georgia. Mary Ann and Jim are both truly Photographic Artists. |
